Inland Empire Iris Society
IRIS: Goddess of the Rainbow
The Inland Empire Iris Society (IEIS) is a group of iris enthusiasts
dedicated to growing all types and colors of the "rainbow" in our
gardens, and sharing our love of iris and gardening skills with others.
Since 2005 the club has maintained a demonstration garden in Spokane's
premier garden park, Manito Park. Twice a year we hold sales of iris
rhizomes from the demonstration garden as well as our personal gardens.
We also regularly join other garden clubs/societies to increase public
awareness of good gardening practices, participate in annual events such
as Arbor Day events, and co-host an annual juried iris show.
Members who participate in various club activities, including but not
limited to host, librarian, and historian can earn points toward the
purchase of hybridized iris from top growers allowing for new iris to be
cultivated in our region.
Established in 1954, IEIS is a non-profit organization with a
constitution and bylaws. Members receive a booklet containing club
information and opportunities for participation. IEIS is affiliated with
the American Iris Society (AIS) as a member of Region 13. In 2009, IEIS
will be co-hosting the Region 13 AIS conference in lieu of the annual
iris show.
IEIS meets the fourth Thursday of each month (excluding the winter
months of: November, December, and January) at 7:00 p.m. in Manito
Park's Meeting Room near the Conservatory. A typical meeting consists of
a speaker or presentation, a coffee and treat social, general meeting
business, and a time to share our enthusiasm about the iris. Speakers
and presentations consist of a wide variety of horticultural topics of
interest with an emphasis on iris from: club members, other
clubs/societies, and or commercial establishments.
